The Financial Times has quoted incoming Akin Gump public law and policy partner Clete Willems in the article “US rift with Europe widens ahead of Orban visit,” which reports on the strained relationships between the United States and its European allies.
According to the article, the Trump administration is taking heat from opponents for its undermining of traditional alliances with the European Union and NATO over matters such as climate change, transatlantic security and trade. Instead, the article reports, President Trump will soon be welcoming to Washington the authoritarian Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban. It also says that Mr. Trump is expected to follow through with a threat to impose tariffs on European cars.
Willems, a former international economics advisor to President Trump who most recently led the White House Office of International Economic Affairs, said it was “critical” that the United States and EU work together. He added, however, that Washington “has serious concerns about the EU’s agricultural market access barriers, regulatory barriers for autos and other products, and taxation policies that harm U.S. technology companies.”
Willems is due to join Akin Gump next month. (Click here to read more.)
