As reported by various media outlets, Akin Gump public law and policy partner Clete Willems offered his views on the U.S.-China trade conflict and the possibility for its resolution.
In a video segment, Fox News interviewed Willems on President Trump’s posture toward the Chinese. He said, “The President has shown, time and again, that if China isn’t willing to commit to real structural reforms, that’s not a deal that’s good enough for him.”
He also noted that there are real differences between the administration’s position regarding tariffs on Mexico versus those on China.
Willems added, “These deals that the Trump administration are working on with China are backed up with strong enforcement provisions.”
FX Empire reported Willems’ comments in an interview with CNBC, where he said, “There won’t be a deal at the G-20 [summit],” adding that a meeting between Trump and China’s President Xi Jinping is “a necessary ingredient at this point.” He noted that any G-20 meeting between Trump and Xi would only lay the groundwork for a possible deal.
