Governor Tommy G. Thompson Returns to Akin Gump
(Washington, D.C.) – Akin Gump announced today that Tommy G. Thompson, former four-term governor of Wisconsin and former Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary, will be an Adjunct Senior Advisor to the firm, renewing his long affiliation with the firm where he was a partner from 2005 to early 2012. Governor Thompson will serve in this role in an advisory capacity, and will provide strategic advice to select clients across the firm on a range of policy and business issues.
Governor Thompson has spent a significant portion of his career in public service. He served as governor of Wisconsin from 1987 until 2001, at which time he was nominated by President George W. Bush to serve as Secretary of HHS, a position he held until 2005. As Secretary, among other achievements, Governor Thompson led the Bush administration’s efforts to pass the Medicare Modernization Act in 2003.
Since his term in public office, Governor Thompson has dedicated himself to building on his efforts as HHS Secretary and governor to develop innovative solutions to the health care challenges facing various businesses and organizations as well as governmental agencies at the local, state and federal level. These efforts have focused on improving the use of information technology in hospitals, clinics and doctors’ offices, promoting healthier lifestyles, strengthening and modernizing Medicare and Medicaid, and expanding the use of medical diplomacy around the world.
Governor Thompson’s depth of experience encompasses advising an array of businesses, organizations and nonprofits on issues related to policy, governance, strategy and more. This includes serving as co-chair of the Aspen Institute's Health Strategy Group and as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, as well as service on the board of directors of Centene Corporation; C.R. Bard, Inc.; United Therapeutics Corporation; Physicians Realty Trust; and TherapeuticsMD, Inc.

Tommy G. Thompson is a former U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary and four-term governor of Wisconsin. From 2005 until 2009, Governor Thompson served as a senior advisor at the consulting firm Deloitte and Touche USA LLP and was the founding independent chairman of the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions, which researches and develops solutions to some of our nation’s most pressing health care and public health-related challenges. In addition to the other organizations on whose boards he serves, Governor Thompson served as chairman of the board of directors of Logistics Health, Inc. from March 2005 to May 2011 and served as president from February 2005 to January 2011.
Governor Thompson began his career in public service in 1966 as a representative in Wisconsin's state Assembly. He was elected assistant Assembly minority leader in 1973 and Assembly minority leader in 1981.
Governor Thompson has received numerous awards for his public service, including the Anti-Defamation League's Distinguished Public Service Award and the Friend of Zion Award in 1997. In addition, Governor Thompson received Governing magazine's Public Official of the Year Award, as well as the Horatio Alger Award in 1998. He has also served as chairman of the National Governors’ Association, the Education Commission of the States and the Midwestern Governors’ Conference. Governor Thompson also served in the Wisconsin National Guard and the Army Reserve.
Governor Thompson received his B.S. and J.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
