Gregory Knopp Again Named Among California’s Top Labor Lawyers

(Los Angeles)  For the second consecutive year and third out of the last four, Daily Journal has named Gregory W. Knopp, a partner in the Los Angeles office of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, to its 2013 list of California’s top labor and employment lawyers.

Mr. Knopp was recognized for his work on behalf of client Starbucks, including his role as lead trial counsel in York v. Starbuck Corp.¸ a suit filed on behalf of a putative class of thousands of baristas and shift supervisors working in California over a five-year period.  The putative class included more than 100,000 current and former employees.

The suit took various twists and turns, as a judge, in 2011, denied class certification with respect to most of the claims and granted Starbucks summary judgment on a few claims.  In 2012, however, the claimants sought recertification, but a court, soon thereafter, granted the company summary judgment on the only certified claim.  The parties then resolved the plaintiffs’ only remaining claim under California’s Private Attorney General Act (PAGA), which allows private citizens to pursue civil penalties.

Founded in 1945, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 850 attorneys in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
