IFLR Publishes Christopher Poon Article on Mifid II and Investment Research

Akin Gump financial services regulatory counsel Christopher Poon’s article “Researching research costs” has been published by IFLR.

The article discusses the projected impact on investment research of the revised Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (Mifid II). Once Mifid II takes effect in 2018, EU managers and independent advisers will be prohibited from receiving any third-party inducements and will have to pay for investment research themselves or set up research payment accounts that are funded by clients.

Poon discusses the need for stakeholders “to consider the value proposition for research from all sides of the table” in order to find a sustainable model under what will be revised circumstances. In the article, he explores topics such as the meaning of “research” under Mifid II, the appropriate price point and pricing methodology for such research, and alternatives to conventional research, among other subjects.
