(Washington, D.C.) – Former U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, currently a senior advisor at Akin Gump, has been elected as one of six new members to the National Endowment for Democracy (NED)’s board of directors.
NED was established in 1983 as a private, nonprofit, grant-making foundation with a mission to strengthen democratic institutions around the world through nongovernmental efforts. With an annual appropriation from Congress, the independent, bipartisan board makes more than 1,600 grants each year to support projects that promote political and economic freedom and participation, human rights, a strong civil society, independent media and the rule of law.
Ros-Lehtinen joined Akin Gump earlier this month (click here) after nearly three decades in Congress. She was the first Hispanic woman to serve in Congress and served as Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
