Jason Zhao Authors Article on China’s Natural Gas Pricing Reforms

Akin Gump staff attorney Jason Zhao, a member of the firm’s corporate practice in Beijing, has written the article “Nationwide natural gas pricing reforms implemented in China,” which was published in The Energy Law Advisor.

In the article, Zhao summarizes the changes, noting they pertain to “city gate” prices—the price of gas at the point where downstream purchasers, such as local gas distribution companies, take ownership. Zhao also discusses how the new, more market-oriented pricing approach, which links city gate gas prices to imported competing fuels, may help alleviate China’s rising gas demand by encouraging increased supply. This, he adds, should “help bring domestic gas prices in China more in line with international levels and reduce losses suffered by gas importers.”
