José Villareal Honored with Orden Mexicana del Aguila Azteca, Highest Mexican Award for Foreign National
(Washington, D.C.) – Akin Gump is pleased to announce that consultant senior advisor José Villareal has been honored with the Orden Mexicana del Aguila Azteca (Order of the Aztec Eagle), the highest honor awarded to a foreign national by the Mexican government, in a ceremony held November 17 at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, D.C.
Created in 1933, the Orden del Aguila Azteca recognizes foreign citizens whose efforts have benefited Mexico and Mexicans, or humanity, more generally. Among prior recipients are Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, President Nelson Mandela, Sen. Edward Kennedy, Bill and Melinda Gates, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Cesar Chavez.
In awarding this honor, the Mexican ambassador to the United States noted Mr. Villareal’s distinguished career in the public and private sectors as well as his work with the U.S.-Mexico Foundation to strengthen education in Mexico and develop bilateral understanding and cooperation.
