For its article “Slim majorities in the new Congress will make big legislation difficult,” Los Angeles Times quoted Akin Gump public law and policy partners Ed Pagano and Arshi Siddiqui on challenges facing Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats in the 117th Congress.
Pagano, who served in the Obama administration as Senate Liaison and Deputy Assistant to the President for Legislative Affairs and, for nearly two decades, with Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), said that he expected Speaker Pelosi would hold on her position after the vote on Sunday, noting “She knows her caucus really well.”
However, he added in reference to perceived intraparty disagreements between moderates and progressives, “Speaker Pelosi has her work cut out for her. It’s going to be tricky.”
Siddiqui, a former senior advisor to Pelosi, said that, with Joe Biden as President, Democratic priorities stand a greater chance of being realized, noting, “There will be a very spirited debate, but I think the unity holds because there is so much to do.”
She did add, however, that COVID will shape the legislative road ahead of the party.
