Lauren Leyden, labor and employment partner at Akin Gump, spoke with the Society for Human Resource Management for its article “8 Workplace Legal Trends for 2018.” Leyden discussed a new law in New York requiring paid family leave.

The article notes that California, New Jersey and Rhode Island currently offer paid family leave, with New York joining the list in 2018. Paid family leave in the Empire State will be a big change for employers, said Leyden. She pointed out that the program will be phased in over the next few years, but employers need to understand the calculations and other mechanisms of the law and how new requirements compare to current employer offerings.
