Law360 Quotes Stanley Brand on Corruption Trial of Philadelphia District Attorney
Stanley Brand, senior counsel in the litigation practice at Akin Gump, has been quoted in the Law360 article “Quick Trial Could Provide Lifeline For Philly DA,” regarding the federal corruption trial of Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams that begins June 19. Williams is accused of using his influence on behalf of two businessmen in exchange for expensive gifts.
The judge in the case, the article notes, is seen as possibly the toughest on criminal defendants in Pennsylvania’s Eastern District, but he has also made matters hard for the government, denying an early motion to delay the trial’s start date before ultimately agreeing to push it back by about three weeks.
The article reports that Williams did not agree with the government’s initial request to delay the trial, and Brand said this may be because he believed speed would work in his favor. “I think it’s a tactical advantage for the defense when they believe they have a triable case,” he said.
In the end, Williams did agree to the additional days of preparation when the trial’s start date was pushed back from the end of May.
