For its article “4 Pressing Trade Policy Questions Looming In 2022,” Law360 quoted Akin Gump international trade partner Stephen Kho on the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) planned ministerial summit.

Given COVID-19-related postponement of the summit, the article reports that the WTO’s director-general said that members do not need to have a summit to make progress.

Kho, who served as legal advisor to the U.S. Mission to the WTO, said that summits have, historically, created an urgency that compels government negotiators to make deals. He said, “I don't think people should freak out and think there's going to be no forward progress. The nature of these massive negotiations is you're only going to see progress at a big scale when you get close to the end, when push comes to shove.”
