Law360 has quoted Akin Gump pro bono partner Steven Schulman in the article “BigLaw Appellate Associates Cut Teeth On Pro Bono Cases.” The article reports that, for many junior law firm associates, pro bono cases provide a great opportunity to argue cases before federal courts of appeal and, in some cases, the U.S. Supreme Court.

At Akin Gump, Schulman notes, associates jump on pro bono matters that raise the chance of oral argument. “When there is the opportunity for oral argument, especially in circuits like the Ninth Circuit — which will virtually guarantee argument to pro bono counsel — those opportunities tend to be very popular,” he said.

“There’s no doubt that [oral arguments] is a real carrot for pro bono attorneys,” Schulman added. “It’s experience that you can’t really get at a young level on billable matters.”
