Legal 500 Recognizes Akin Gump Attorneys, Practices in Europe and the Middle East

(Washington, D.C.) – The Legal 500 EMEA 2014, which provides ranking and analysis of law firms working in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, published today, has recognized a number of Akin Gump practices and individuals in the firm’s European and Middle East offices as among the leaders in their respective fields.

For Russia, Akin Gump was recommended in the following areas of practice:

  • banking and finance
  • capital markets
  • corporate and M&A
  • dispute resolution
  • energy and natural resources
  • real estate
  • tax
  • TMT (telecommunications, media and technology).

Dmitry Shiryaev, who heads Akin Gump’s banking practice in Moscow, was singled out as a leading individual in banking and finance.  The firm’s work on behalf of clients such as LUKOIL, Vimpelcom and AF Telecom was also noted, with a particular emphasis on Akin Gump’s representation of Renova in the sale by the Alfa-Access-Renova consortium of its stake in TNK-BP for $28 billion.

For Switzerland, Akin Gump was recommended in the following areas of practice:

  • dispute resolution
  • EU, competition and WTO
  • tax.

Charles Adams, partner in charge of the firm’s Geneva office and head of Akin Gump’s international arbitration practice, was singled out as a leading individual in the area of dispute resolution, and Akin Gump was noted as a leading firm within Geneva.  The firm’s broad range of capabilities was spotlighted, as the profile noted that Akin Gump “is well equipped to handle major cases involving foreign law, including English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Chinese law. Recent highlights include acting in the enforcement of an award against one of the world’s largest container ships, and steering an investment case to a settlement for less than one-tenth of the €14bn initially claimed.”

For United Arab Emirates, where the firm has an office in Abu Dhabi, Akin Gump was recommended in the following areas of practice:

  • banking and finance
  • corporate and M&A
  • construction
  • projects and energy.

Akin Gump’s work with Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth funds and “other government-related entities such as the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority” was spotlighted.
