Akin Gump policy partner Ed Pagano was quoted by Legal Times for its article “New Legislation Seeks to Bolster Trade Secrets Protection” on the Defend Trade Secrets Act, introduced by Sens. Coons and Hatch.

According to the article, the lawmakers seek to create the first federal right of civil action for trade secrets theft. They said that a number of companies and business groups support the legislation.

Pagano said that the need for such legislation is highlighted by broad support from the business community.  Senate Judiciary Committee chair Patrick Leahy, with whom Pagano worked for nearly two decades, has indicated his support for the bill.

Pagano noted that the bill “is on a fast track. There’s strong momentum behind the bill,” for which he expects a congressional hearing in mid-May.
