Akin Gump international trade partner Lars-Erik Hjelm was interviewed by the Marketplace program on American Public Media for a story on the exemption process for steel and aluminum tariffs. The story reports that the Department of Commerce has received roughly 2200 applications for corporate exemptions from the tariffs previously announced by the Trump administration.

Hjelm said there has been “lots of interest,” but getting the exemption can be difficult, Companies have the best chance, he noted, if they can prove they can’t get the products they want to import in the United States. “Showing the lack of an available quantity and sufficient quality in the U.S. market is the main challenge.”
