Neal Marder Named a National Law Journal Litigation Trailblazer
(Los Angeles) – Akin Gump litigation partner Neal Marder has been named to The National Law Journal’s third annual list of Litigation Trailblazers—50 people “who have helped make a difference in the fight for justice.”
In a profile of him that ran in the publication, Marder, who is usually a defense lawyer, was recognized for blazing a trail in two separate cases. In one of them, he represented the plaintiff and obtained a $42 million verdict, plus $30 million in punitive damages. In the other, he defended an insurance company that was sued in approximately 16 class actions, with a total demand of more than $380 million in damages. The case settled with his clients only paying $2 million.
Looking ahead at future trends in the class actions space, Marder said he thinks Article III standing will continue to be a hot issue following the Supreme Court’s decision in Spokeo. (Read more about that here.) Sometimes, he said, “it’s difficult for the plaintiffs to come up with a discrete injury, other than just the violation of a law. This will keep class-action lawyers very busy.”
