NLJ Names Akin Gump to 2018 Appellate Hot List
(Washington, D.C.) – The National Law Journal has named Akin Gump to its 2018 Appellate Hot List. The firms on the list were selected for their wins in key matters over the past year before the U.S. Supreme Court and federal courts of appeal.
Speaking of Akin Gump’s success, Supreme Court and appellate practice co-head Pratik Shah said the firm’s top victory was its work in Patchak v. Zinke, a long-running dispute over the Gun Lake Tribe’s property. (Click here to read more.) Akin Gump was retained to preserve the tribe’s “tenuous D.C. Circuit victory,” a case that Mr. Shah noted, “raised a difficult constitutional separation-of-powers question regarding Congress’s authority to affect pending cases.”
Mr. Shah highlighted the specific areas in which Akin Gump developed its appellate strength during the past year, which included Indian law, patents, labor and bankruptcy. These led to high-profile victories for Indian Tribes and the National Football League, among others, as well as the 150th appellate argument of his career by Mr. Shah’s practice co-head Rex Heinke.
When asked what advice he would give to his younger self, Mr. Shah said, “Don’t be afraid to think creatively. Sometimes you need to take a different tack to win a challenging appeal, so have the confidence to rethink, revamp, and reframe arguments.”
Founded in 1945, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
