Akin Gump public law and policy partner Robert Leonard has been quoted in the MarketWatch article “Here are the biggest corporate tax issues on Congress’ plate right now.”

The most pressing issue, according to the article, is the tax extenders, which includes more than 50 tax breaks, such as a business-research credit and so-called bonus depreciation. Leonard says resolution of the tax extenders “is clearly a priority.”

Major tax reform, however, the article notes, is not expected before the 2016 elections. While the House Ways and Means and Senate Finance committees have held hearings on the matter, Leonard described any progress as “a tough slog.” He added that “a continuing challenge confronting the two tax committees and their respective chairman in 2016 will be to lay the necessary policy foundation so that the next Congress can truly be a ‘reform’ Congress and tax reform more than an aspirational goal.”
