Stanley Brand Quoted in POLITICO on Aaron Schock Investigation

Stanley Brand, senior counsel in the litigation practice at Akin Gump, has been quoted in the POLITICO article “Schock in limbo as feds still loom,” regarding an expected federal grand jury decision on whether to indict former Rep. Aaron Schock.

Schock resigned from office last year, amid questions, as the article reports, over tens of thousands of dollars in mileage reimbursements he received from the government for his personal vehicle. While some, according to the article, say the investigation is dragging on, Brand, a former general counsel to the House of Representatives, said the case is not taking an “inordinately long” amount of time.

Brand continued, “It’s pretty standard, especially with all these issues [involving] the Speech or Debate Clause and its application.” He was referring to a constitutional privilege that shields members and their staff from legal action over legitimate legislative activity. “That slows it down, and other things can slow it down. … These cases, they are not cookie-cutter cases.”
