State Bar of Texas Honors Akin Gump’s CentAm Asylee Pro Bono Work with W. Frank Newton Award
(San Antonio) – Akin Gump’s work on behalf of Central American women and children seeking asylum in the United States was recognized by the State Bar of Texas on June 18, as, at its annual meeting, the organization honored the firm with its W. Frank Newton Award.
The award, presented by the State Bar of Texas Legal Services to the Poor in Civil Matters Committee, recognizes the pro bono efforts of attorney groups, such as law firms and corporate law departments, whose members have made “an outstanding contribution toward increasing access to legal services for the poor.”
Akin Gump was nominated in recognition of its work in setting up the Karnes City Immigrant Family Pro Bono Project, in conjunction with several immigration and human rights NGOs, to provide legal representation to detained Central American women and children who fled the violence and danger of their home countries to seek asylum in the United States.
