Akin Gump international trade partner Stephen Kho was interviewed by American Public Media’s Marketplace program for a segment on how the United States will choose which Chinese products to target with new tariffs. President Trump says the planned move is to punish Beijing for its trade practices.

According to the report, the Trump administration wants the tariffs to be felt in China, but not by the U.S. companies or consumers that buy Chinese goods. Kho said the typical way to do this is to “look at the products that matter the most to the country – products that have either some legitimate economic significance or some sort of symbolic significance.”
