Steven Zager Participates in Podcast on Business Development
Steven Zager, head of the intellectual property practice at Akin Gump, has been featured in the podcast “LeftFoot – Fresh Conversations on Business Development.” Zager discussed several topics related to lawyers developing their business. Some of the highlights are the following:
- Personal strengths and habits that have allowed for success at developing and retaining clients: The ability to listen. Zager said he fears that with the proliferation of electronic communication, lawyers may lose the ability to listen. “When a client has a significant problem, they want to know that their lawyer is going to listen to what they have to say—not just nod your head, but internalize what you’re hearing in a meaningful way.”
- How he shows clients he is listening and cares about their business: “You need to understand your client’s business and your client’s view of your role in that business.”
- How millennials have changed the way he operates: “We bring [them] in at the very beginning. We involve them in discussions of case strategy. We introduce them to the client. We take them [with us] to court, because we’ve found that when they feel that they’re a part of something larger than themselves, that gives them a tremendous amount of job satisfaction.”
Zager also discussed the budget process, geographic growth of Akin Gump’s IP practice and the importance of secondments for junior lawyers.
