(Washington, D.C.) – The National Law Journal has named Akin Gump international trade partner Kevin Wolf to its inaugural list of Technology Trailblazers, recognizing “movers and shakers in the legal industry who have made an impact in their sector through new types of strategies or innovative court cases.”

Recognized for his “pioneer spirit,” the profile notes that Mr. Wolf began doing international trade work in the early 1990s because he was “fascinated by the intersections between national security, foreign policy, business, domestic and international law, regulation, civil and criminal defense, interagency dynamics, politics and just about every type of technology you can think of.”

Mr. Wolf is cited for blazing trails that included serving as Assistance Secretary of Commerce for Export Administration under President Barack Obama, where he was “directly responsible for administering regulations over a wide range of military and dual-use technologies—those with both commercial and military or WMD applications—controlled for national security and foreign policy purposes.” He also was a Commerce Department representative to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). Since leaving government service, Mr. Wolf has testified before Congress on CFIUS-related matters, pointing out that several of his suggestions were “ultimately reflected in bipartisan CFIUS and export control bills that became law last August.”

In the future, Mr. Wolf says getting export controls “right” will be a function of “resources, creativity and political leadership” in order to determine what is essential for national security. While the proper statute and regulations are in place, he worries that “the system needs more support and resources.”
