Thomson Reuters Westlaw has published the article “Washington state lawmakers divided over private right of action and other relief in dueling data privacy bills,” written by Akin Gump cybersecurity, privacy and data protection practice co-heads Natasha Kohne and Michelle Reed and litigation partner Anthony Pierce and counsel Melissa Whitaker.

The article, which originated as an Akin Gump client alert, discusses legislation in Washington state pertaining to the first consumer data privacy law there. The authors compare and contrast several aspects of the state’s Senate and House bills with the California Consumer Privacy Act. They look at several key issues to watch, noting that the law “would apply only to legal entities that conduct business in Washington or target products or services toward Washington residents.”
