Akin Gump international trade partner Tatman Savio appeared in the TRT World story “Hong Kong businesses fear consequences of trade war.” The report, which notes that Hong Kong has tried to position itself as an economic gateway between China and the rest of the world, looks at the potential impact on Hong Kong of a trade war between the United States and China.
Manufacturing, TRT World reports, only makes up about 5 percent of Hong Kong GDP, but exports and imports overall account for roughly one fifth of the local economy. As a result, increased trade tensions could be felt by many businesses.
“There’s a general sentiment of concern about the possibility of relations between the United States and China deteriorating further,” said Savio. “As you know, there are a lot of issues at play and at stake—not only the tariffs, we’ve talked about the foreign investment regime, [and] there’s the export control regime as well.”
