For its article “U.S. Deploys New Tactics to Curb China’s Intellectual Property Theft,” The Wall Street Journal quoted Akin Gump international trade partner Kevin Wolf on U.S. government attempts to use national security considerations to control exports.

Wolf, who, prior to joining Akin Gump, served for seven years as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Administration in the Bureau of Industry and Security at the Commerce Department, said that Commerce has broad authority to restrict U.S. exports to such entities as it believes could undermine national security. However, he said, typically these threats have been more narrowly defined, citing support of terrorism, business with countries such as North Korea and Iran, and violation of export control rules as examples.
