Washington Business Journal Names Two at Akin Gump to List of Top Washington Lawyers

(Washington, D.C.) – The Washington Business Journal has named James R. Savin, a partner in the financial restructuring practice at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, as the winner of Top Washington Lawyer honors in the category of Bankruptcy.  In addition, the paper recognized Michele A. Roberts, a partner in the firm’s white collar criminal defense practice, as a finalist in the category of Corporate Litigation.  The winners and finalists – culled from hundreds of nominations in 15 areas of law – were announced on September 17 at the Washington Business Journal’s annual Top Washington Lawyers awards reception.

Mr. Savin focuses on corporate restructurings and bankruptcy law, representing official and unofficial committees of unsecured creditors, debtors, secured creditors, DIP lenders and acquirers of businesses and assets in large, complex Chapter 11 cases and out-of-court restructurings.  His restructuring matters encompass a variety of industries and involve multijurisdictional and cross-border matters.  He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and the Emory University School of Law.

Ms. Roberts focuses on criminal and civil litigation in state and federal courts and administrative proceedings.  Before entering private practice, she served for eight years in the office of the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia, and ultimately was named chief of the office’s trial division.  Washingtonian magazine has consistently ranked her among Washington’s top lawyers, calling her “the finest pure trial lawyer in Washington – magic with juries, loved by judges, feared by opposing counsel” and one of Washington’s 100 “most powerful” women.  She is a graduate of Wesleyan University and the University of California at Berkeley – Boalt Hall.
