Several years ago, Akin Gump’s firmwide Women’s Professional Development Initiative Committee held its second two-day retreat in Washington, D.C., for all female lawyers in the firm’s domestic offices, including partners, senior counsel, counsel and associates.
The retreat included seminars on topics such as leadership, communication skills, mentoring and work/life balance and client development. The retreat provided a program that reflected the interests of the firm’s female attorneys as well as an opportunity for the attendees to connect with lawyers from across the firm and across practice areas.
Women’s Professional Development Committees also meet in Akin Gump’s local offices. The local office Women’s Professional Development committees have hosted events ranging from a presentation from former U.S. Senator Kay Hagan, Senior Policy Consultant at Akin Gump (Washington, D.C.), to an event with clients to view the film “Equity” (Houston). In 2015, the firm’s Houston office sponsored the Women’s Power Summit at the University of Texas and Akin Gump’s chairperson Kim Koopersmith presented. The Women’s Professional Development Committees in the Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C. offices also host events during their summer programs to bring together female attorneys and summer associates and provide an opportunity for networking.
