International Trade

Our renowned international trade practice represents clients in international trade, investment, and other regulatory matters involving the WTO, WIPO, WHO, International Standardization Organization, World Customs Organization and other Geneva- and European-based international agencies, whose activities increasingly affect the interests of sovereign governments, trade associations and multinational corporations.

The Geneva office provides experienced trade lawyers in one of the world’s most important focal points for international trade, and have also litigated trade cases outside of Geneva before other trade tribunals, such as under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA).

According to Chambers, Akin partner Stephen Kho has “very high-level knowledge of international trade and he’s very savvy when it comes to developing strategy.” Stephen previously served in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, where he led the U.S. delegation in WTO and North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) dispute resolution proceedings and in various free trade agreement negotiations.

During his government career, Stephen also served as the U.S. legal advisor to the WTO and chief counsel on China matters. In addition to Chambers, Stephen has been recognized by The Legal 500, Best Lawyers in Switzerland and Who’s Who Legal.

Akin partner Alan Yanovich has extensive experience on international trade issues and other international regulatory matters. Alan advises governments and private sector clients on market access and investment barriers across jurisdictions, and on international regulatory processes. He has represented governments around the world in litigation at the WTO, under FTA dispute settlement mechanisms, and in other international fora.

Prior to joining Akin, Alan spent 12 years at the WTO Appellate Body Secretariat. He is a frequent commentator on WTO issues and has published numerous articles on a variety of trade and international policy issues. Alan has been described by Chambers as “extremely knowledgeable about the WTO system, not just the law. He is always able to give us immediate answers about WTO processes, what to expect, and what the pros and cons are of choosing a particular option in relation to the procedural aspect of a case.” Alan has also been recognized by The Legal 500, Best Lawyers in Switzerland and Who’s Who Legal.
