Biography
  • Focused on credit and derivative transactions.
  • Had extensive experience in the energy and investment funds sectors.
  • Involved as counsel in more than $100 billion of debt transactions.

Bill retired from the partnership in 2022. He represented borrowers, issuers, sponsors and financial institutions in debt and related transactions. The commitments and issuances on which he provided advice totaled in excess of $100 billion. He also represented more than 50 families of funds in connection with prime brokerage and derivatives matters. In addition, he advised on controversies related to such matters.

Bill had extensive experience working with the energy industry and in Russia, as well as in forming and/or serving as general counsel for 501(c)(3) organizations providing disaster relief. He represented the individual trustees for the $20-billion Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Trust and served as general counsel for the Houston Katrina Relief Fund.

In addition to his practice, Bill served at various times in many administrative capacities at Akin. Bill was a member of numerous firmwide committees, including the management committee, pro bono committee and corporate steering and opinion committees. He also served as the partner in charge of the firm’s Moscow office.

Significant Transactions

  • Represented Anadarko Petroleum Corporation in its $24-billion acquisition bridge facility in connection with its acquisitions of Kerr-McGee Corporation and Western Gas Resources Inc.
  • Represented Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, Bill Barrett Corporation, Birch Permian Holdings Inc., Dynegy Inc., Vital Energy Inc., Memorial Resource Development LLC, NorthernStar Generation LLC, Sanchez Energy Corporation VCA Antech Inc., Western Gas Partners LP, Wildhorse Resource Development Corporation and others in connection with their primary credit facilities.
  • Represented OAO LUKOIL in connection with the LUKARCO BV joint venture with ARCO and the joint venture’s $5-billion project financing facility.
