The Military End Use(r) Tool, Akin’s online platform that powers a comprehensive and consistent risk-based approach to military end user (MEU) due diligence, is a valuable client resource and an award-winning platform.

The Military End Use(r) Tool is a state-of-the-art regulatory tool that Akin developed to help clients comply with the U.S. Department of Commerce’s export control restrictions to identify whether transactions may involve a “military end use” or “military end user” in certain countries.

The application automates our clients’ diligence process in assessing the MEU-related risk of their customers. The Military End Use(r) Tool is a collaborative, web-based tool that clients use to screen their customers against several expansive and bilingual data sets, including a list of entities with military ties, web keyword searches and search engine hit results using advanced programming automation.

This information, mined meticulously and automatically by the Military End Use(r) Tool, is then identified for review and supplemented with corporate database information by Akin’s global team of international trade lawyers and legal assistants located across the United States, Europe and Asia. We then work with the client’s compliance team to advise on a determination as to the risk level of engaging with the customer under section 744.21 of the U.S. Export Administration Regulations.

The Military End Use(r) Tool provides an auditable recordkeeping function for MEU risk- and evidence-based disposition, including supporting notes and auto-generated timestamped records.

Akin has been recognized for its strategic partnership with Palantir Technologies, which powers the Military End Use(r) Tool. This relationship exemplifies our commitment to providing innovative solutions to clients and working collaboratively and efficiently with eminent software providers to enhance our clients’ success.

For the firm’s cutting-edge work incorporating the Military End Use(r) Tool, Akin won the CIO 100 Award for Tech Innovation in 2022. This marked the fourth time the firm received the recognition. According to CIO, the awards are “an acknowledged mark of enterprise excellence.”
