Pro Bono Scholars Program & Pro Bono Practice

The common thread throughout Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP’s pro bono work is justice—ensuring that everyone has fair access to first-rate legal services regardless of ability to pay. We encourage summer associates to build a strong foundation for pro bono work by taking on assignments with our partner organizations.

A Chance To Learn, A Chance To Help

Involvement in pro bono projects is an integral part of the summer program. Pro bono work presents a win-win situation for summer associates—the opportunity to dig in and get hands-on experience while seeing the impact their work can have. Summer associates will take on significant responsibility, with direct exposure to clients and the fundamentals of legal work that will pay immense dividends as their careers at Akin Gump progress.

Over the years, the firm has formed relationships with numerous legal services organizations that offer valuable opportunities for summer associates to develop their skills and talents. These organizations all handle important matters, and the firm works hard to find assignments consistent with our summer associates’ individual interests and passions.

Expect to make a difference. Our summer associates have not only gained invaluable experience, they have contributed to significant victories for their clients. Under the supervision of Akin Gump attorneys, summer associates have taken the lead in representing abused immigrant women looking to obtain permanent U.S. residency under the Violence Against Women Act; assisting asylum seekers fleeing civil war, ethnic fighting and religious and political persecution; and preparing affidavits and motions in adoption and custody cases.
