Diversity & Inclusion

A diverse community makes our firm an exciting, inclusive place to work—and we look forward to adding your unique perspective. Akin Gump’s mentoring, training and professional development programmes support diverse practitioners in building and expanding networks. Vibrant diversity and inclusion committees operate firmwide and locally, and contribute to all hiring initiatives. The London committee includes a trainee representative, opening up connections with peers, senior lawyers and firm leadership. Our firmwide resource groups support LGBTQ+, BAME and women lawyers, and also focus on social mobility, abilities and parents/caregivers for a truly inclusive working environment.

We address diversity and potential unconscious bias in our London trainee programme application process. We do not have minimum A-Level requirements and personal details are removed from applications before screening. We invite successful applicants to take a critical thinking assessment, and all top scorers are invited to interview.

  • We are members of Aspiring Solicitors, an organisation working to increase diversity in the legal profession.
  • We partner with Bright Network on a wide range of diversity and inclusion student outreach programmes.
  • We are a supporting member of the Social Mobility Foundation (SMF) and host a summer internship programme for A-Level students and sponsor sixth-form career workshops. Our trainees can also volunteer for SMF’s Recruitment Success Service, which assists selected undergraduate students with applications for internships and graduate roles in the legal sector.
  • We are a primary sponsor of AS Foundation, a charity offering financial relief for students pursuing a career in law.  The foundation provides applicants with study resources, laptops, textbooks and online research subscriptions and/or scholarships.
  • We are long term sponsors of City Year UK, a leading youth service organisation that provides mentors to students in low-income communities. In 2019 Joe Hewton was named a City Year UK London Bridge Builder award winner.
  • The London office is a member of Stonewall’s Diversity Champions Programme, the leading UK employers' programme for LGBT employees, working to ensure that all people are accepted, without exception, in the workplace.
