Summary

On October 4, 2023, the Federal Trade Commission held a roundtable discussion seeking “to better understand the impact of generative artificial intelligence on creative fields.” The roundtable included speakers from a range of creative industries and associated organizations, such as negotiators from the Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild, members of the Authors Guild, and a Policy Fellow at the Software Freedom Conservancy. In her opening remarks, Chair Lina Khan noted that “there's no AI exemption, so all of the laws that already prohibit unfair methods of competition or collusion or discrimination or deception, all of those laws still entirely apply.” The discussion that followed largely focused on the risks AI poses to artists and creatives, along with calls for regulation to protect them.
