May 16, 2023

United StatesU.S. Congress

Summary

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Privacy, Technology and the Law Subcommittee. In his opening remarks, Chair Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) played an AI-generated audio recording that mimicked his voice. Sen Blumenthal outlined the need to impose restrictions on the use of AI systems, or even ban certain systems in instances of “commercial invasions of privacy for profit.” Members such as Sens. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) also discussed the merits of creating a national regulator for AI—an idea that Altman also voiced support for.
