On July 18, 2023, U.K. Foreign Secretary James Cleverley hosted the first ever United Nations Security Council (UNSC) briefing session on AI, where he announced plans for the U.K. to “bring world leaders together for the first major global summit on AI safety” in fall 2023. During the summit, Secretary Cleverley stated that the goal of the event will “be to consider the risks of AI and decide how they can be reduced through coordinated action. . . We must seize these opportunities and grasp the challenges of AI – including those for international peace and security – decisively, optimistically and from a position of global unity on essential principles.”
