Summary

On August 30, 2023, the United States Copyright Office issued an NOI in the Federal Register regarding “a study of copyright law and policy issues raised by generative AI” and “whether legislative or regulatory steps are warranted.” The Copyright Office specifically seeks factual information on the use of copyrighted works to train AI models, transparency and disclosure regarding the use of copyrighted works, the legal status of AI-generated outputs, and the treatment of AI outputs mimicking the personal attributes of human artists. Comments are due Wednesday, October 18, 2023.
