Akin has been recognized as part of the Afghan Pro Bono Initiative (APBI), which was named the winner of the Pro Bono Award at the 2026 LexisNexis Legal Awards. The awards celebrate excellence, innovation and impact across the legal profession, with the Pro Bono Award honoring innovative programs and outstanding contributions to access to justice.
APBI was established to address the urgent need for Afghans to access legal information, advice and representation relating to safe routes to the United Kingdom. The initiative is a multiyear collaboration led by Refugee Legal Support and Safe Passage International, alongside ten international law firms. The project operates across the UK, Afghanistan and neighboring countries and has grown into the largest collaborative pro bono effort of its kind in the UK.
Since its launch, the initiative has provided full legal representation to 284 Afghans, delivered one‑off legal advice to more than 500 individuals, and shared reliable legal information with over 2,000 people. This recognition reflects the dedication and commitment of the lawyers involved, and the power of collaboration in advancing access to justice.
The Akin team working on the initiative was led by partner Kambiz Larizadeh and included senior counsel Aimee Smart, counsel Suley Siddiqui and associate Radu Suciu.
