Akin white collar defense & government investigations partner Peter Altman has again been selected among Daily Journal’s Top White Collar Lawyers, and this year is joined by white collar defense & government investigations partner Lance Jasper. According to the publication, this recognition honors the leading white collar defenders in California.

Among Peter’s recent work, the publication highlights his successful six-year representation of an individual in an SEC receivership of Direct Lending Investments, concluding with a settlement that resolved all claims against his client prior to litigation initiation. The Daily Journal also highlights his representation of the CEO of BitMEX, including the results of a presidential pardon and case dismissal with no payment required by Peter’s client. Peter reflects that in complex disputes such as these, “achieving success in these cases involved good communication and careful planning with the client, thorough investigative work and joint defense relationships.”

Peter also emphasizes that the recent changes “across federal law enforcement, including priority adjustments and headcount reductions, have placed pressure on efficiency within the government.” Peter previously received this recognition in The Daily Journal’s 2023 series. Learn more here.

In Lance’s profile, The Daily Journal highlighted Lance’s recent work representing a public company under SEC investigation, which he credits as “among my best opportunities to combine a lifelong love of problem solving with what I learned over the course of a decade conducting investigations and litigation in the SEC’s enforcement division.”

Lance also discussed a recent case which “presented challenges in balancing client privacy with litigation strategy,” stating “we used a creative, case-specific approach to the pleadings to obtain third-party discovery without disclosing our clients’ identities.”

On technology’s influence on professional standards in the legal practice, Lance reflects that “on the one hand, we need to embrace broader changes in technology and culture, including to meet our clients’ and colleagues’ expectations. On the other, we are best served by maintaining our standards and investing in what still has value, such as apprentice-style training for new lawyers.”
