NLJ Names Stacey Eisenstein a 2022 ‘Sports Law Trailblazer’
(Washington, D.C.) – Akin Gump is pleased to share that The National Law Journal has selected labor and employment partner Stacey Eisenstein as one of its 2022 Sports Law Trailblazers.
In the profile published on the occasion of her recognition, Ms. Eisenstein spoke about what made her a trailblazer, starting with joining Akin Gump, building her career around complex labor and employment issues and becoming involved in the sports industry through the firm’s long-standing client relationship with the National Football League.
She discussed the nature of her and her team’s innovation: “Our team has helped to create precedent in the area of sports law and has been part of landmark decisions that have altered the landscape of how the cases proceed and what standards apply. We recently secured a pivotal ruling for the NFL, obtaining dismissal of all claims brought by players who ‘claimed the league was negligent in how it allowed teams to distribute painkillers and other prescription drugs to keep players on the field’.”
Ms. Eisenstein closed by noting that the sports industry is evolving, with major, novel issues arising in college sports, including student athletes-as-employees, Title IX, and NIL (name, image and likeness). This “new ground” will generate, she says, “decisions and outcomes that could be bellwethers for the sports industry.”
