Since 2002, Akin Gump and Fintage House have co-hosted the annual Jorge Gallegos Memorial Cannes Boules Tournament, bringing together hundreds of the film industry’s movers and shakers attending the prestigious festival. This year’s edition was held on May 19 at Promenade de la Croisette in Cannes.
Akin Gump entertainment and media practice head P. John Burke and the event were featured in coverage picked up by several publications. Entertainment outlet Times Square Chronicles spotlighted the event, calling it a “one of a kind event [that] brought over 400 of the film industry’s key business players together” and noting that it combines “the sport of pétanque with a casual but high-powered party during the most famous international film festival of the year.”
All proceeds from the annual tournament directly benefit the humanitarian organization FilmAid International, which uses film and media to bring information and training to refugees and communities in crisis worldwide. In 2005, the event was renamed in honor of Gallegos, a respected industry figure who perished in the Thailand tsunami of the preceding year.
