For its article “Self-driving trucks with Chinese ties face a long road ahead in the U.S.,” The China Project quoted Akin international trade partner Christian Davis. The article looks at an investigation by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) of TuSimple, a U.S. autonomous trucking company. One of TuSimple’s founders also started Hydron, a privately held startup established with Chinese backing in the P.R.C. The investigation, notes the article, looked into a possible breach by the company of its 2022 National Security Agreement with CFIUS to protect technology developed in the U.S.

Christian, whose practice focuses on representing clients before CFIUS, said that the Treasury Department has a history of working with accused parties on compliance. He noted, however, that that has been criticized by some, adding that “Something that people say [CFIUS] needs to focus more on is more enforcement.”
