Am Law Features Akin Gump in Story on Success of Law Firm Virtual Summer Programs

The American Lawyer has quoted Akin Gump’s director of attorney recruiting, Lauren Marsh, in the article “Lessons Learned From the Year of the Virtual Summers.”
Akin Gump held a completely remote, five-week program from July 6 to August 7 for 81 1L and 2L summer associates. In moving to a virtual format, Marsh said one of her main concerns was helping associates feel connected both to the firm as a whole and to the offices they would be joining, but the feedback from the summer associates was overwhelmingly positive.
In an effort to bring the summer associate class closer together, the article reports that the firm created a “hackathon” competition to create new, tech-driven solutions to campus recruiting.
“Our summer associates were happy with the level of engagement from our attorneys and with how the lawyers were not deterred from virtually taking time to network with them, participate in training programs, host coffee chats and mentoring sessions,” Marsh observed. The summer associates, she added, “walked away with the same feeling that they would have from a traditional format despite the changes we had to make.”
