The American Lawyer quoted Akin international trade partner Christian Davis for an article looking at the impact of protectionism on the global deal landscape.

The article notes that, with global regulatory bodies moving toward protectionism, there may be a change in where deals get done and where the money goes to and comes from.

Christian, whose practice focuses on representing clients before the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, or CFIUS, said that enhanced regulatory controls will impact where, and how much, business is transacted in certain places and between specific countries: “We are seeing increased regulations to support national security, foreign policy and human rights concerns. That has been a trend over the last few years, and it is a departure from the more globalized economy we had built.”

He noted that, as a result, some companies have begun to diversify their manufacturing process overseas to mitigate potential fallout from continued deterioration of relations between the U.S. and China, which could affect where and how deals are done.
