The Texas Lawbook has quoted Akin Gump corporate partner Eric Williams in an article previewing the outlook for M&A activity in 2020. While prospects may seem bleak right now, given the spread of the coronavirus, the article says some of it was foreshadowed last year.

According to the Lawbook, both the number and size of deals in Texas were down in 2019 from the previous year. Williams, who joined Akin Gump earlier this month, echoed that, by observing that the beginning of 2019 was somewhat slow. Activity subsequently picked up, though, and turned out to be a “decent” year, despite buyers becoming a little more picky on diligence issues.

“We had multiple transactions that started, paused and started again; things took longer to get done,” Williams said. “We’ll see what happens this year.”
