In Memory of Rob Rothman

Akin Gump mourns the passing of our longtime friend and colleague, Robert Rothman.
A senior counsel in Akin Gump’s tax practice, Rob was one of the foremost federal tax practitioners in the country. Beyond his exemplary work on behalf of our clients, Rob was also a scholar and prolific writer, penning numerous well-regarded and intellectually rigorous articles on topics in his field, as well as a beloved and important mentor to a generation of tax lawyers.
Rob did not confine his skill with the written word to the complex world of tax law. A poet and inveterate punster, he was, by his own description, “one of the world’s foremost practitioners of the art of tax poetry (probably because he is one of the world’s only practitioners of the art of tax poetry).” His poems, such as “The Rhyme of the Ancient M&A,” were published in a well-known tax journal.
Rob’s exceptional knowledge, kindness and jovial nature will be greatly missed by all of us at Akin Gump, and we offer his family and friends our most heartfelt condolences. To honor his memory, the firm is creating an annual scholarship in Rob’s name at the NYU School of Law in their Tax LLM program.
