Kevin Wolf, international trade partner at Akin Gump, has been quoted by several international media outlets on a new round of restrictions placed on China’s Huawei by President Trump. The move comes amid renewed accusations that China is using the company’s telecom equipment for spying.
The Associated Press, in the article “Trump administration imposes new Huawei restrictions,” reports that Huawei has repeatedly denied accusations it might facilitate spying by the Chinese. Beijing has accused Washington of using national security as an excuse to stop a competitor to U.S. tech industries.
According to Wolf, while the action specifically targets Huawei, it could have widespread effects. He told the AP, as well as The Washington Post and the Nikkei Asian Review, “Every foreign-made semiconductor of any type anywhere in the world is now subject to U.S. license requirements if a Huawei company is in any way involved, directly or indirectly, in the transaction.”
Wolf also told the Post that U.S. software and equipment are essential in chip factories around the world and said the new prohibition is therefore extremely broad.
