For its article “Bipartisan Bill Would Expand CFIUS Reach To Farmland,” Law360 quoted Akin international trade counsel Katherine Padgett. The article looks at a bipartisan bill—“Protecting U.S. Farmland and Sensitive Sites From Foreign Adversaries Act”—introduced in Congress that would give the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, or CFIUS, greater jurisdiction over farm and other land purchases near sensitive national security sites by “foreign adversary entities,” per the bill’s language.

Katherine commented, “On a first read, the bill appears to be a significant expansion of CFIUS' jurisdiction over real estate transactions involving investors from the identified list of 'foreign adversary' countries.”
