Akin lobbying & public policy partner and former senior Trump administration trade official Kelly Ann Shaw spoke to BBC Radio 4 following the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, discussing efforts to address strategic supply chains and what the outcome could mean for both countries.
Kelly Ann Shaw tells the BBC: “Ultimately what President Trump and President Xi were trying to do was effectively manage the areas where the U.S. and China can trade. I think this is about addressing a few key sectors and issues and it really sets a course for how the next three years will go between the U.S. and China.”
The BBC went on to ask if Kelly Ann expected to see significant change following the meeting, she said: “Typically following a meeting like this, there is a period of relative calm, no sides will likely take steps to destabilize the relationship.” She added that, at this point, "it's really about managing the breakup in a way that does a limited amount of damage…this is not a relationship that is necessarily going to improve dramatically anytime soon.”
